The word restricted simply means you need special permission to enter a restricted place. The trekking route which needs special permits or documents to trek through is a restricted area . You can get this type of trekking from the govt of Nepal, Kathmandu (Nepal Tourism Board & Nepal Immigration). There must be a minimum of 2 people to issue this permit. Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo among a few others are marked as restricted area trekking. Only a few foreigners had visited this part of the world because it is perhaps one among the remote trekking trails.

Things You Must Know Before Planning a Restricted Trekking Region
In Nepal, many trekking routes are open for FIT (Freelances Individual Trekkers) or suitable group sizes. There are few trekking routes that are restricted zone trekking and are strictly controlled and authorized by the govt of Nepal for those FIT trekkers. One can only visit this trekking region after being issued an authority from the Department of Immigration Nepal. The guide holding license will be provided for a single trekker, a permit only isn’t acceptable. One who has an interest in trekking in these routes must contact genuine legal trekking companies.
Adventure Mountain Nepal affords a group joining facility to an individual trekker who is willing to trek in restricted areas of Nepal. One must confirm that the expiry of the visa is up to date to receive the special permits of the restricted areas.
Tips for Restricted Area Trekking
- Preserving a local tradition, culture and customs is our responsibility and we must respect it.
- Minimum group sizes of 2 people are required for issuing the special permits. The individual is banned from the legal process but group joining might be an option. Permits can be issued from the Nepal Tourism Board, FIT (Freelance Individual Trekking), and the Department of Immigration (Kalikasthan, Kathmandu). - Clothes, types of equipment, and safety gear are a compulsion. Guides, porters, and other helping staff will be having their personal accident insurance.
- The suggested routes are only for trekking purposes which means they cannot be changed. The companies, guides will be responsible if the routes are changed.
- Travelers must obey the rules and regulations of the restricted areas.
- Travelers who also do the expeditions must need the permit as well before passing these areas.
