Introduction

Island Peak also is known as Imja Tse Peak is a part of the eastern Himalayas located inside Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park. This is one of the popular and highly climbed peaks in Nepal categorized as a “Trekking peak” by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) which is impressively rising at the southern ridge of Lhotse Shar. Eric Shipton named the peak in 1951 after he had seen the sea of ice over the peak. The Swiss trekking team in 1956 AD were the first one to climb Island peak. They opted Island Peak Climbing for their warm-up preparation of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse Expedition, trip rewards with stunning views of the world’s popular mountains including Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Baruntse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Lhotse Shar, and many other snowcapped Himalayas.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m/4,592ft) and transfer to Hotel.

Adventure Mountain Nepal Trekking and Climbing’s airport arrival and departure representative will meet you at the airport as per your arrival schedule. He/she welcome you and drive to the hotel. Check-in hotel and take a rest or relaxation time at Hotel. Then you can have a free excursion to know the surroundings and visit our office to get brief information of Everest Base Camp & Kala Patthar Trek elevation, we also conduct an introduction program with trekking leader and official team.

Day 02: Guided tour around world’s Heritage sites of Kathmandu.

Breakfast Hotel/Resort

Early morning breakfast at the hotel and our guide will pick you up from a hotel for sightseeing of World Heritage Sites. Actually, there are seven World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu and we arrange sightseeing spots according to your choice but you have to choose only 3/4 spots for a day since it is not possible to visit all places in a single day–at least 2/3 days requires to have sightseeing tour of all heritage sites in Kathmandu. World Heritage Sites of UNESCO in Kathmandu are; Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Swyambhunath Temple, Pashuapatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa and Changu Narayan Temple. In the evening we again can have pre trek discussion.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800m/9,184ft) & trek to Phakding (2,650m/8692ft).

Early in the morning drive to Domestic terminal of Tribhuwan airport and take a flight for about 30 minutes to Tenzing Hillary airport Lukla. Lukla is the beautiful valley which is surrounded by High Mountain and hills from all direction. Make sure the backpacks and all stuffs fully arranged to get started the trek towards Phakding. The easy and scenic trail follows soft descends to the bank of Dudh Koshi River, follow the river bank of the river before we reach at Ghat. After there we continuously walk gentle ascend to Phakding. We visit several Gompas, Monasteries and beautiful stone carving (written Buddhist scripts) all the way to Phakding.

Day 04: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283ft).

5-6 hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Early breakfast at teahouse. Follow ascent trail through pine forest. We have to cross several suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River, gradually walk via Benkar, Chumoa and Monjo to reach at check post of Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park where we have to record our National Park entry permit. With a walk of zigzag ascends and descends, mostly uphill takes us towards the capital of Sherpa people at Namche Bazaar. We can have a beautiful view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru Peak and other.

Day 05: Rest day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and excursion around the places.

We are already at above 3,000 meters from sea level at Namche Bazaar, it is a perfect way to acclimatize by resting and exploring around at Namche Bazaar before ascending towards higher altitudes. As per health experts suggests keeping moving and stay active to adapt to the weather, today we can take a walk towards the Khumjung monastery (an important Buddhist monastery to explore) or ascend up to Syangboche viewpoint. Over there from Syangboche, we can have excellent views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, and other snow-capped peaks. In the evening, we can explore around the Bazaar, can use ATMs, use internet cyber, cafes and restaurants to be close with locals as well as learn the unique culture, traditions, and lifestyles of Sherpa’s.

Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,867m/12,684ft).

5-6 hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Early breakfast at the teahouse. Follow smooth trail with few ups and down with a super view of Himalayas throughout the trek, Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and Thamserku are some of them. Along the trail we also can have chance to encounter with Musk Deer, Himalayan Thar and Multicolored Pheasants. The trail goes continuously towards Sansa via Kyangjiuma, which is the main junction point to split out the main trail of Everest Base Camp & Kala Patthar Trek and Gokyo Lake Trek. After there, we again follow pine forest, prayer flags and festooned bridge of Dudh Koshi to reach Punki Thengh which is a small village with small army post. Then we follow ascends trail through pine forest to reach Tengboche – is great valley for close view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Ama Dablam and Thamserku as well as biggest Buddhist monastery of Mt. Khumbu region known as ‘Tengboche Monastery’. Interested can attend the praying program at 03:00 pm over there.

Day 07: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,358m/14,294ft).

5-6 hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Breakfast at teahouse. Follow ascend the trail to cross a small village. We gradually walk north to Pheriche or take eastward trail which both leads us to the northern part of Mt. Ama Dablam. After some walk we reach at Imja village. Then we follow the descend trail to the river and climb the steepest trail of the day which leads to Dingboche. Along the trail, we can see cultivated land of barley, potato, and buckwheat, as well as local people, made the largest stone walls to protect crops from cold wild and grazing animals. So then, at evening we explore the Sherpa village of Dingboche.

Day 08: Trek from Dingboche to Island Peak Base Camp (5,087m/16,685ft).

6-7 Hrs walk Full Board Tea Houses are not available–Tented Camps

From Dingboche, we make a leisurely start following the Imja Valley with great views of Ama Dablam dominating the skyline and follow the moraines that be due to Lhotse (8501meters) towards the sand flats at Pareshaya Gyab. we'll reach within the mid-afternoon. are going to be a tented camp for the next two days and you'll be having camp food cooked by our professional cook. Overnight at tented camp, breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Pre-Climb Training: After lunch, our guides will provide training on peak climbing techniques and using climbing gears like ice axe , climbing boot and crampons, harness, ascender, etc and on the way to go up and down using ropes. Although it's not mandatory to possess prior training experience for Island Peak Climbing, we believe that some training experience will step up your confidence and climbing skills, thus increasing the probabilities of scaling the summit also on fully enjoy the experience.

Day 09: Climb Island Peak (6,189m/20,299ft) and back to Base Camp.

8-9 Hrs ascend/descend Full Board Tea Houses are not available–Tented Camps

Island Peak Ascent (6,189m), we start our climb early within the morning, generally around 1 AM. within the beginning, we climb the rock gully. This is often not difficult but there are several short rock steps to climb before we emerge on the proper side of the gully. The route then follows a ridgeline, which results in an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier.
We need to fasten for the glacier because it contains several crevasses. The guides will fix a rope wherever necessary. A steep snow slope leads us onto the summit ridge. After enjoying the summit views, and taking pictures. overnight at island peak base camp.

Day 10: Trek from Island Peak Base Camp to Dingboche.

5-6 Hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Early morning after breakfast we descend to Dingboche for overnight. Overnight guesthouse/tent, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 11: Trek from Dingboche to Namche Bazaar.

6-7 hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Leaving the mountains behind us our descent takes us through various towns of Orsho, Somare and Pangboche, Tengboche then Pungki Thanka and complete steep to Kyangjuma, and easier trail to Namche. Overnight at guesthouse, breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 12: Trek from Namche Bazar to Lukla.

5-6 Hrs walk Full Board Tea House available

Breakfast at teahouse. Last day ofIsland Peak Climbing with Gokyo to EBC Trek follows descend trail to Phakding. We have to cross Suspension Bridge of Dudh Koshi, pass through pin and rhododendron forest with different prayer flags and stone rocks on the way back to Lukla.

Day 13: Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel.

Early morning breakfast at lodge. Walk to Lukla airport for schedule flight. Adventure Mountain Nepal Trekking and Climbings’ airport arrival and departure representative will meet you at the Kathmandu airport. Drive to hotel. At the evening feel free for leisure and personal activities such as Shopping, markets explore, spa, massage, rest and relax can be an option.

Day 14: Spare day. Free for personal activities or additional activities on request.

Breakfast & Farewell Dinner Hotel/Resort

This is a day as a spare which can use with rest, relaxation and free walk around the market. Day trip in request: Sightseeing, Meditation, Paragliding, Short Hiking, Mountain flight and other activities can be done according to you plan. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner together with entire team of Adventure Mountain Nepal.

Day 15: Final departure. Drop to airport as per flight schedule.

Our airport arrival and departure representative will drop you at Tribhuvan International Airport on your scheduled flight.

Where is Island Peak?

Island Peak(Imja Tse) lies in the Eastern Region of Nepal, located at Solukhumbu or Everest Region at an altitude of (6189m/20305ft) at 27.9242° N, 86.9373° E geographical coordinates.

How hard is Island Peak Climbing ?

Island Peak Climbing is considered strenuous difficult. Basically this trip is recommended for beginners who have a basic level of mountaineering skills and high altitude trekking experience. Island Peak Climbing serves as a preparation for higher mountain expeditions such as Mt. Everest.

Which is the best season for Island peak climbing ?

The best season for Island peak climbing is during Spring (March, April and May) and Autumn (October and November). During these seasons conditions are safe enough for climbers to try and reach the summit, the weather will be clear, moderate temperature, you will get long sunlight hours, fewer bugs, flowers will bloom on the way, the charm of the atmosphere can be felt by the heart, magnificent views of the Himalayas can be seen and you can escape the crowd and enjoy adventure peak climbing.

What are the permits required for Island peak climbing ?

How long will Island Peak Climbing ?

According to the standard itinerary our Island Peak Climbing with EBC is of 15 days from your arrival to Kathmandu to farewell at Airport. If you wish to amend the itinerary you have to contact our booking manager and climbing leaders; they will prepare the best itinerary for you.

How many climbers will there be in a group ?

Generally for Climbing and Mountaineering we take up to 10 members in a group so that we can guide and coordinate each of them perfectly. If you have a group with more than ten members it’s fine with us. We provide some customizable features however if you are planning to climb solo it is not possible due to the restrictions made by Nepal Mountaineering Association(NMA).

What about Food and Accommodation Services ?

Due to the advancement of the trekking industry, we can find enough lodges and tea houses throughout Island Peak Climbing trip routes. They offer good food and accommodation. There are different options you can choose according to your needs and budget. Also you should know that at high altitude and remote places the service will be limited.

Do I need to have Travel Insurance during Trip ?

Yes!! It is recommended to have travel insurance during the trip. It is uncertain that you will not feel sick or get into any accidents during the trip. So, for medical emergencies and as precaution against risks and financial losses that could happen while climbing/trekking, insurance is best.

Should I manage the equipment/accessories for climbing by myself ?

All the equipment/accessories required for climbing will be arranged for you. You will have to pay the amount for equipment. If you personally want to manage any equipment by yourself it’s fine. Are your staff equipped/trained & insured ?

We hire our staff according to their standards. They should have to go through our selection procedure on which we will check their certifications, qualifications and experience. Hence, Our staff are equipped/trained and insured.

What about altitude Sickness ?

Normally, within 12-24 hours after ascending a certain height (1,500 to 2,500 meter above sea level) altitude sickness symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, sleep problems, shortness of breath, and loss of energy can be seen. In case of any altitude sickness symptoms we will apply medication and descend immediately for acclimatization. Measures for treating Acute Sickness:

  • You should stop and rest where you are for at least 24 to 48 hours
  • If you feel sick, take an anti-sickness medicine, such as promethazine/diamox
  • Make sure you're drinking adequate amount of water
  • Smoking, Drinking alcohol, or Exercise will make it worse
