Introduction

Chomolhari Base Camp Trek  is one of the most challenging trekking in Bhutan but promises an unforgettable experience. The trekking takes you around the ridges, along the valleys, crossing the passes, and through the steep slopes. The stunning view of the mountain peaks covered with snow, hills, plateaus, and the landscapes covered with forests remains in your memory forever. You would also get an opportunity to spend the night in the middle of yak herds, interacting with the herders at the campsites. The trip is not all about trekking but also about exploring the cities of Paro and Thimphu.

Chomolhari Base Camp Trek Highlights

  • A memorable trekking experience where you explore the most beautiful valleys and plateaus, walking along the rivers and hills.
  • Stunning view of the surroundings which include the mountain peaks covered with snow, beautiful landscapes, forests and more.
  • Two days dedicated to sightseeing at Paro and Thimpu, one for each
city. During the visit, our guide would take you to some of the most
    popular heritage sites.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at the Paro International Airport.

Our representatives will greet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel in Paro. If you arrive early, we will have enough time to visit Ta Dzong. It was initially a clock tower but was later transformed into a national museum. In the evening you can talk a casual walk to discover the city and the people.

Day 02: Sightseeing at Paro.

The next day will be dedicated to sightseeing in Paro. In the morning, we will be visiting the Lhakhang Temple. After taking lunch, we go for a small hike to Dzongdrakha (at 8,100 ft). This short hiking prepares you for the tough trekking in the upcoming days and also lets you get used to the climate and altitude. On our way back, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Bondey Valley from the top. In the evening, you can shop and explore the city more.

Day 03: Travel to Drukyel Dzong/ Shana.

Today is the day when we would begin to trek. Early in the morning, we would drive to Drukyel Dzong, a fortress that stands tall in the footsteps of Mount Chomolhari. We leave the roads to follow the trek that goes along the river. We rest at the Shana camp at the altitude of 9428 ft. in the middle of the two valleys. The surrounding is covered with pine forests.

Day 04:Trekking from Shana to Soi Thangthanka.

Day 05: Trekking from Soi Thangthanka to Jangothang.

We continue to trek along the valley that gradually widens into a plateau. We continue trekking of about 10 miles through the plateau to reach Chomolhari Base Camp set up at the base of an ancient fortress at the altitude of 13, 288 ft.

Day 06: Exploring the surroundings at Jangothang.

We would spend the next day at the same place, exploring the surroundings and majestic view of the Mount Chomolhari.

Day 07: Trekking from Jangothang to Tso Phu.

Today, we eventually leave our base camp to trek further upwards to Tso Phu at the altitude of 14, 100 ft. It would be a short trekking distance of just about 4 miles but will challenge your strength and stamina with the steep slope. However, the spectacular view of the mountain peaks standing tall in the middle of the plateau will keep you engaged. Our tent for tonight will be in between the gorgeous valleys.

Day 08: Trekking from Tso Phu to Chorapang.

We would touch the highest point of our trekking, the Bang Tue La Pass (15, 600 ft) before starting to trek downwards. We would start to trek early in the morning to make sure we cover most of the 8.5-mile-long trek by the afternoon. The view of the mountains and blue sheep herds along the way is just amazing..

Day 09: Trekking from Chorapang toThang Bue.

The trekking continues around the ridges across the streams on the next day where we climb to the top of Takalung La pass (14,400 ft). If the weather is clear, you would be thrilled with the sight of Mount Chomolhari and Jitchu from the top. We would be setting our camp for the night at Thang Bue in the middle of herds of yak and the herder’s camps.

Day 10: Trekking from Thang Bue to Shana.

As we trek further, we are greeted with the beautiful landscapes and mountains on the surroundings covered with rhododendron. After going through a short steep climb, we start to descend again sharply. One of the best attractions of this challenging, descent of 4500 ft is the quickly changing forests from rhododendrons to pine and from pine to oak.

Day 11: Trekking from Shana to Thimphu.

The trekking on the final day becomes relatively easier because of the flat tracks as we walk towards the Drukyel Dzong. This is the endpoint of trekking. We transfer you to the hotel at Thimphu. In the evening, you can visit the Taschicho Dzong and shop at the local markets.

Day 12: Sightseeing at Thimphu.

The next day is dedicated to sightseeing at Thimphu. We would take you to some of the most amazing places in Thimphu including Memorial Chorten, Takin Preserve, and the Zilukha Nunnery. Spend the night at a hotel in Thimphu.

Day 13: Thimphu to Paro.

After enjoying a wonderful day of sightseeing in Thimphu, we travel back to Paro on the next day. We would arrange for the airport transfer from the hotel according to the scheduled departure of your flight.

Great Trip We had a great time in Nepal thanks to Pradip and his team! From landing to take off we were thoroughly looked after. We were greeted at the airport and the same person helped us in Katmandu both sides of the trek, picking us up from our domestic flight and again taking us to the airport at the end. He was always early and received a sweet momento on arrival and departure. Due to weather we unfortunately had to make a last minute decision to change our route; Pradip and the guide See Wa were very accommodating and we easily changed from ACT to Poon Hill and ABC. He quickly sent us a new itinerary and we were picked up the following morning. We were given options as to how we wanted to get to Pokhara and Pradip made this seamless for us. Many trekkers also had to change their route to ABC rather than other routes like ACT and EBC which meant the tea houses were very busy. Our guide ensured that we always had a room to stay in and was flexible with our itinerary if we wanted to walk further/fit in a visit to the hot spring. At times it was a bit difficult to communicate with the guide due to the language barrier and we found we were fitter so would often be walking ahead with one of the porters but over all we had a good experience and would recommend.
